Greenville County ARES

SkyWarn logo

Greenville SkyWarn operates a weather net on the Caesars Head Repeater:
146.610-
Any time the NWS issues severe weather warnings for our area. At times, there may be inclement weather in the area but a net is not activated due to the thresholds and guidelines set forth by NWS. A net may be activated in "Standby Mode" if a severe weather warning has been issued in a nearby county and cells may move into our county. Although these nets are non-directed while in Standby Mode, all stations on frequency should operate as if a net is active. The Net Control Station (NCS) will request that extra space be left between transmissions and conversations be kept short to allow for stations to break in with weather-related reports if needed -- otherwise the repeater may be used normally. If weather situations occur that require us to activate a directed net, NCS will announce as such and all traffic should then be directed to Net Control for the duration of the net. Greenville County SkyWarn net controllers have been through Advanced Storm Spotter training and have been certified by NWS in proper reporting criteria. All net controllers are in direct contact with NWS as well as surrounding county/regional SkyWarn leadership to aid in gathering reports and providing the best quality information to NWS and the local community.

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!!!

As weather spotters, you are the eyes and ears on the ground below what NWS sees on radar, and you are the front line for accurate weather related damage reporting. Our NCS's have a lot to manage during severe weather events. They constantly monitor local radar feeds, scan and listen to various frequencies, monitor NWS Watches and Warnings to be announced on the air and receiving/forwarding reports provided by spotters in the community. You can help by reporting the things that matter the most.

We need reports of:

Any size hail -- provide largest size and start time
Damaging winds or measured wind gusts of 58MPH or higher
Tornadoes
Funnel Clouds
Flooding

These events fall within the requested criteria of NWS. For more information, please explore the links below. Visit our Downloads page for spotter manuals.
